How it works
Choose a PNG image from your device.
Select Convert Image to encode a WebP copy at the original width and height.
Inspect the preview, compare the file size, and download the WebP.
Why use this tool
WebP can provide a smaller delivery file for website graphics while retaining transparent areas from a PNG. ImgZelo draws the source onto a transparent browser canvas and exports WebP without adding a background. The image never needs to be uploaded to ImgZelo servers.
How PNG and WebP store images
PNG is a lossless format known for crisp graphics and alpha transparency. It works well for logos, interface elements, diagrams, screenshots, and assets that may be edited again. Complex photographs saved as PNG can become large because every decoded pixel must be represented without lossy simplification.
WebP is a web-focused format that supports both transparency and efficient compression. ImgZelo exports the converted file using the browser's WebP encoder. A detailed PNG often becomes smaller, but the exact reduction depends on the image, and a simple optimized PNG can occasionally remain competitive.
Transparent pixels remain transparent
The converter creates a canvas with the PNG's original dimensions and does not fill it with a background when WebP is selected. It then draws the source and exports it as image/webp. Genuine transparent and partly transparent pixels are therefore retained when the browser supports WebP encoding.
Check the result preview around soft shadows, antialiased edges, and translucent overlays. A checkerboard drawn into the original as visible gray and white pixels is ordinary image content, so it will remain visible. Conversion cannot infer which visible pixels you intended to remove.
Use WebP for delivery and PNG for dependable masters
WebP can be useful for website logos, product cutouts, illustrations, interface assets, and other graphics where download weight matters. Modern browsers handle WebP well, and smaller assets can improve page loading when many images are used together. The conversion preserves the source width, height, and aspect ratio.
Keep PNG when a print, editing, archive, or legacy workflow specifically expects it, or when lossless preservation is more important than delivery size. Converting formats cannot recover detail, sharpen a blurry source, or undo earlier compression. Retain the PNG as the master and use WebP as a tested delivery copy.
Frequently asked questions
Does PNG to WebP preserve transparency?
Yes. The browser canvas remains transparent for WebP export, so genuine transparent and translucent pixels are retained.
Will WebP always be smaller than PNG?
No. It is often smaller for detailed images, but simple or highly optimized PNG files may already be efficient.
Does conversion change the dimensions?
No. The WebP keeps the PNG's original width, height, and aspect ratio.
Will conversion improve a blurry PNG?
No. Changing the format does not create missing detail or improve the quality of the original pixels.
Is the PNG uploaded for conversion?
No. Images are processed locally in your browser and are not uploaded to ImgZelo servers.
